Where is a good place to stop over for the night that is farther than Summersville, WV but not as far as Statesville, NC enroute to Hilton Head? We already looked at Wythville, VA, any other suggestions? We want to try and make it say about 5-6 hrs the 1st day and then the rest the second------------------ Beth IP: Logged |

We live east of Pgh near Irwin and have traveled to Hilton Head many times. Wytheville is about 5 1/2hrs from here. If you want to go a bit farther, maybe 30 minutes, we've also stayed in Hillsville. If this is your first trip, you will find it a nice, easy drive with good roads. Watch your speed when you travel through Summerville. They police it real well!IP: Logged |

Mt. Airy is about one-half hour south of Hillsville just into North Carolina. They have Microtel, Best Western, and a couple other chain hotels.IP: Logged |

We too from the Pgh area and drove to MB last summer. We stopped at Tamarack Outlets just for a break. Antigues, but very pricey. Drove on to Wytheville and went mining, then on to Asheboro for the night.(9 hrs maybe) The next day we went to the NC Zoo for about 4 hrs and then on to MB, about a 4 hr drive. This was such an easy drive this way, instead of us doing the 14 hr drive in one day. And to get to HHI is not any further then MB cause it is more highway driving. IP: Logged |

jmp.bp - we have gone to HHI 5 times before and yes it is not a bad trip - even with 3 small kids. Normally we leave in the morngin and go farther and try to stay in statesville or somewhere farther and have the bulk of the trip done and only a few for the next day. But this time we are leaving in the afternoon and doing the bulk of the trip the next day. Wytheville looks like a good bet, so now, can you recommend a decent hotel that is not real expensive. We have stayed at the Hampton in Hillsville and it is nice, but more than I want to pay for a short over night stay. We have never stayed in Wytheville so I am not sure how the hotels are there.Oh, by the way - I work in Monroeville - which is not too far from you so we have some fellow tuggers in the area. We should have a PGH tug meeting. I tried it a few years ago but did not get many takers.

Do you have small children with you? We make it from Cleveland to HHI in 12 hours, including gas and one lunch stop doing 5 miles an hour over speed limit-oops. 14 hours seems long, but not if you stop frequently.IP: Logged |

We're from Washington, PA -- half hour south of Pgh on the wonderfully under construction I-79. We have made it to Hilton Head in 10 1/2 hours -- adults only -- not having to stop for "potty calls" all the time and a quick bite to eat. Much easier of a trip than going to Myrtle Beach! I'd love a Pgh TUG get-together! IP: Logged |

Good to know there are fellow tuggers in area! We usually stay at the Sleep Inn in Wytheville. It runs us $50-60/night depending on when we travel and has the typical continental breakfast bar. At that exit there's a T/A truck stop with good gas prices and there's a Hampton and a couple others. If you go one more exit there are a few more choices. On a future trip, if you get an early start, Rock Hill, SC was a good stopping place. Nice area, mall, shopping, variety of restaurants. Easy on/off interstate, about 8 hours from here. Have a great trip. If you have any other questions, let me know. Barb IP: Logged |

BarbDo you guys own at HHI or MB? We own 2 Marriots - one in Fla and the new one in MB. If you feel like trying to have a PA TUG meeting - send me an email as jazzeaw@att.net and maybe we can plan one. Beth ------------------ Beth IP: Logged |

Beth, we own Barony (gold & eoy platinum) and a Grande Ocean silver. Our friends own in Myrtle-went there with them last fall and loved it-going again in September. I forgot to mention, if you want to go as far as Hillsville, check rates at the Fairfield. Good for a one-nighter, like to Sleep Inn in Wytheville but has an indoor pool & hot tub. Only have a few minutes, will email you later about a Pgh get-together.IP: Logged |

Hi Western PA neighbors. We live south of Pittsburgh(near Washington PA) and go to HH every year. It usally takes us about 12 or 13 hours when we don't break it up. In April we had our daughter and our granddaughter(age 2) with us so I arranged Priceline rooms for us for $35 each at a nice Fairfield Inn in North Charlotte right off of I-77 in an executive park. Our granddaughter did just fine on the 9 hour trip with a dinner stop at Tamarack (near Beckley WVA) where she got some exercise in the circular shopping area. The next morning we found that our passenger front window had been smashed(glass everywhere)and that a few things were stolen out of our van. Another car had also been broken into that night and a stereo system was stolen. We learned that these break-ins even occured at a Bob Evans off that same exit while people were eating dinner in November. The Fairfield took no responsibility for the break-ins, but they should install a security camera over the one exit out of their parking lot. This cheap deal on rooms sure did cost us. Anyhow,Statesville is a good stopover point and not quite as far. On the way home we had a very nice room through Priceline at the Marriott Charlotte Coliseum for only $50 a room. Their parking lot was patrolled and we also could see it from our room, so that was a good experience. IP: Logged |
