Planning to take a girls trip in January in the continental US. Any ideas of somewhere we can get some sun and has fun things to see/do in January?? Thinking about Palm Springs but it doesn't look like we could go swimming in January. IP: Logged |

Florida is iffy also. Could be very nice and could be too cool. This year I think January was best winter month.Nancy IP: Logged |

You probably need to go further south to have weather warm enough for swimming. Like the Florida keys or southern Texas.------------------ Rick Owner: Sudwala, SA and Lake Tahoe, CA IP: Logged |

I think you'll need to go farther south than the continental US to find beach weather in January. We've been to Cancun after Christmas and found it too windy and cool for the beach and pool. OTOH, we love Hawaii in January!Deb IP: Logged |

After winter trips to FL and the Bahamas, we decided that south of the equator was the only way to find someplace warm in the winter.------------------ Kepi IP: Logged |

Within your restrictions (continental U.S., warm and fun), I would choose Fort Lauderdale, Phoenix, San Diego or the Palm Springs area. However, only in south Florida will you likely find average January temperature highs in the mid 70s. Even there, if you're hoping for consistent beach weather, you won't find it. Termperatures could be in the mid 60s on any given day. If you want to be on the beach most days, you had better head for Hawaii or the central/southern Caribbean, even though that's beyond your target area. IP: Logged |

We have tried Fort Lauderdale, Phoenix, San Diego and the Palm Springs area. Also Cancun. None of them provided warm weather consistently. Now we got to Puerto Vallarta in the winter and the weather is great. Although the airfare is higher, we do not need a car and the food, by and large, is cheaper. So it winds up costing about the same with better results.IP: Logged |

Another vote for the Caribbean in January. We go to Sint Maarten and Barbados weeks 2 and 3, and the weather is usually delightful, in the 80's. This year, on our way back, there was a Nor'Easter covering the entire NorthEast, and we were stuck in Miami for 3 days due to airport closures. Temps in Miami at night were in the 40's, in the day in the 60's, barely, as the bad weather filtered south. It was also very windy, making it feel colder. My parents used to spend winters near Tampa, and they often spoke of running the heat at night in January. Yes, we will continue to head farther south at that time of year.

The Cayman Islands are only an hour South of Miami and air and sea temperature there MUCH warmer than the Atlantic/Caribbean islands like Bahamas or Turks & Caicos... and we are easier/closer to reach than the Eastern/Southern Caribbean.Good deals for advance booking normally available for January too ------------------ www.thereef.com.ky IP: Logged |

Aw, come on...cash in the pension and head to Oz Nothing like New Years fireworks on the beach in a bikini...
Seriously, we were in Palm Desert this past January and the weather was definitely warm enough for swimming. Windy as heck too, on the days we were there (at Shadow Ridge). How do I remember? Wife's car sprung a slow H134 leak and the A/C wasn't doing it's usual good job of cooling. Got downright hot during the day. Also, surprisingly, you might find the SoCal coast fun at this time, especially if the Santa Ana's are blowing. I've been at NCV at Xmas and it's been 90+ down at the beach. Then again, it could rain buckets, and one has what happened at Laguna last week (delayed response to all the rain the area had, it is speculated). Of course, lots more kid stuff in the SoCal area than out in the desert... Hope you have a great time! We'll hopefully be off to Oz, if UA is still flying Pat IP: Logged |

I have lived in Southern California for several years and also in the Fort Lauderdale area for 8 years. As much as I love San Diego and Southern California, I would NEVER recommend them for a winter vacation if weather was your primary concern. Yes, you could have excellent weather and in fact it could even be hot if you arrived during a Santa Ana. I have seen temperatures of 90+ in January more than once. However, the weather could also be rainy and/or cool. There is too much risk involved. Palm Springs is warmer than Phoenix so it could be a better choice than Phoenix. We visit Palm Springs all the time and usually go every December. Sometimes we can swim and sometimes it is too cold. We just got back from Palm Springs yesterday. Fort Lauderdale has the best chance of having warm enough weather for swimming. In fact I have gone swimming in the ocean many times in December and January. The ocean temperature is warmer in Fort Lauderdale than either farther south ( ie Keys ) or farther north because of the proximity of the Gulf Stream. You can also go to the west coast of Florida. Bear in mind that I would ONLY pick Florida if weather and swimming were my absolute highest priority. Otherwise I would go somewhere else. ------------------ John IP: Logged |
