Just my 1/2 cent worth.

I know it’s been hashed and rehashed, but it seems like we’ve gotten off of what’s been decided before.

Here’s the definition of Sightings from the Sightings Board:

“Sightings are posts relating to weeks of special interest that have been found to be available from an exchange company.”
It does not say that Sightings are “all searches”. It says those of “special interest.” The purpose, of course, is so that a TUGger, a paying member, can have the first shot at a special week.

However, it seems like all searches have now been defined as “Sightings” and are not being allowed anywhere else on the BBS.

All searches are not sightings. They are not, “weeks of special interest”. They are not Week 1 at the Galleon or February at The Bay Club or any week at The Manhattan Club. In fact most searches in response to someone’s request for “What Can You See . . .” are just plain old ordinary weeks at plain old ordinary resorts. There’s is no great urgency to stow them away in special place so a TUGger will get them, hopefully.

If all searches become Sightings, then Sightings are not special.

The currect request prompting this thread is such an example.

From the thread we are taking as the “definitive” thread on Sightings:

"Originally posted by JLB:
So, using Ed's explanation, if the purpose of posting a "Sighting" is to discuss the availability pattern in SW FL, or Hawaii, and the originator is posting to the forum that is most appropriate, that would be the Florida or the Hawaii Forum, not the Sighting Forum."

"Originally posted by EdB:
That's a good summary, Jim."

I believe the point made in that thead was to leave searches in the most appropriate forum.

It would seem that if someone asks on the Florida Board, or the Exchanging Board, what’s available in Orlando, then the appropriate forum for replies would be that forum, unless the search turns up weeks of special interest.

Jim,
I didn't save the discussion, but as you say, its been hashed and rehashed. Surely you did (save it), you seem to save everything you think might be useful later, so why are you starting it up again?

No, I'm not "picking on you." I'm just, as you say "making an observation."

Search can find it. There's a few threads I haven't archived.

Because it came up again, apparently differently than it was decided last time.

You're right, Jim. It has been "hashed and rehashed."

If someone wants to know if there is availability, that qualifies as "weeks of special interest that have been found to be available from an exchange company." If someone expresses interest in such weeks, then it's patent that they are "of special interest", right?

No one can come up with one precise, universal definition that will satisfy everyone of what constitutes a sighting, as one man's junk is another man's treasure. But one thing's for sure: if it's requested, that's about as "special interest" as it gets.

Anything for which a search has been done and availability has been found, or any availability that has been found as a direct request for same can be construed as a sighting. They were "sighted" online by someone, ergo they are a "sighting."

We have a specific board for this, the purpose of which was to keep sightings as a members-only perk. Posting the result of searches anywhere else makes them visible to non-members and directly erodes the value of the sightings board for members.

The concept is really quite simple.

Ed said to leave them on the appropriate board. You say to move them regardless.

That's two, completely different, approaches.

You seem to have greatly broadened the definition of "Special interest" to include every search, if someone asked you to do it.

That's not what Sightings/DE was set up for.

If you want to change the rules, then post that no searches can be posted, except on the Sightings Board. That would pretty much eliminate all discussions concerning availability on any of the forums.

I'm not arguing, since I know that is not allowed, and I have no more to say about this, except to say that this position would preclude non-members from replying to some fairly simple requests.

I guess to me, if I had a week to search with and someone posted in the Western forum that there week was showing no So. Cal and I found some with mine I would reply on that forum that I am finding weeks so it might be a trade power issue, as it doesn't really help that person if they aren't accessing it anyway. If I saw things specifically I would then put a note on sightings saying what I had found and what I used to find it. Is this correct?

Liz is exactly correct. "I can see several differnet weeks available" is not a sighting, and is a perfectly acceptable response on any board.

Listing specifically WHAT she saw, resorts, dates, unit sizes, etc., is a SIGHTING and belongs on the Sightings BBS.

It seems easy enough to me.

The problem with this is that not all of us are as knowledgeable. Some of us are still learning what is just a "plain old ordinary resort" Doesn't that mean the newbies shouldn't post their findings because they may or may not be of any value?

Searches used to be posted on all the boards in response to others inquiries about availability.

Guess I missed when the definition changed.

Perhaps I should spend mnore time here and then I'd catch these things.

Thanks for the clarification.

I'll be moving along now.
