I'm trying to figure out where to go in 2005 and/or 2006 with my StarOptions. My kids will be 3 and 6 next year. Can those of you who have traveled to St. John and Harborside give my your opinion on whether these resort are "little kid-friendly"? Would the travel from the West Coast wipe us out? We prefer non-stop flights...obviously we would have to transfer to get to these locations. Are there activities and thing to see for the young ones?We bought at Westin Ka'anapali thinking we would go there every year while the kids were little. Now I'm wondering when we will be able to venture out to the other SVN resorts. Thanks for your help! IP: Logged |

I think the trip itself would "wipe you out". It wiped out us - and it's just my wife and me! That's one of the reasons we sold it - too much hassle and cost to get there from the west coast. But, it is worth seeing at least once!------------------ Chris IP: Logged |

You can get a direct flight to Ft. Lauderdale or Miami, stay overnight and fly the short hop to Nassau the next morning. Not too bad, but I've never done it with kids so young! We loved Harborside, though. I think your kids would really enjoy it.------------------ Kepi IP: Logged |

Sigh, it sounds like we would be exhausted if we try to travel East with 2 kids so young. We are already pretty wiped out just going to Maui, but at least we get 2-3 hours to recover. Going East, we lose 3+ hours. I don't think that my kids will do well overnight in one place and then to another. I guess Maui was the right choice and we'll just have to hang out there every year until we are brave enough to try something new. Thanks for the help!IP: Logged |

We stayed at the 3 bedroom villa in St. John in May. It was a fantastic, fabulous, experience.... but the trip from the Bay Area was BRUTAL. I think if your kids were older they would really love St. John, but at their age, a nice beach a lot closer would probably be just as fun for them.I am currently writing this note from the Westin Kierland Villas in Scottsdale. It's very nice, and the seperate family pool is really wonderful. I think that this can be a very comfortable place for a family vacation, and the short, cheap Southwest flight is a cinch from the Bay Area..... I signed up to go through the sales tour on Wednesday and asked the woman reserving tours if there was any news on Mexico. She said something to the effect of "when you meet with our sales people on Wednesday, they may have a formal announcement about Mexico to share at that time...." so who knows??? Cheers, ------------------ Shelley IP: Logged |

Denise,Have you considered other non-starwood places like Williamsburg, VA and Orlando, FL. We've traveled extensively since my kids were born so, they are pretty much use to traveling. We went to Williamsburg, VA this past summer and my kids ages (3 and 6) had a blast. This was the first trip where they were wiped out from the travel but I think, it had more to do with the resort. When traveling from West to East we always use the first day as a down day. No more commando tours like when we were childless. The resort was so relaxing and the weather was so rainy that the first day the kids slept until 10 am. Also, we've done the Disney Cruise twice from Florida and it was so much FUN. The only down side is that you must arrive the night before. But we stayed at the Hyatt in the airport and it wasn't a problem. Also, we've done Disneyworld once and my kids had a lot of fun there too. They definitely didn't get jag lag there but that could be because of where they were. GL... IP: Logged |

Denise, I think your kids would love Harborside. My kids really enjoyed the Discovery Camp, Bubbles the giant ray, and the pools and waterslides. Oh, and Seagrapes restaurant (buffet).I look at the travel time as part of the adventure (I know, I'm nuts!). My favorite thing to do when going back east is to take the red-eye (usually out of SF). Mostly fly through Miami. Going through Atlanta in 2 weeks on our way to Turks & Caicos. Usually arrive around 5:30am-6:30am. Get a giant Starbucks and a bite to eat at airport. Take a mid-morning connecting flight to whatever island. Kids usually doze or sleep on the plane. Then, like Ciscogizmo1, we use the first day at the resort to just sleep in and laze around at the pool or beach (I start my liquid diet of rum punches ;-)). By the second day, everyone's back on track and we can do whatever, if any activities. I know how you feel about the hassle with traveling with small kids. On a brighter note, in just a couple of years they'll be seasoned travelers and the airport and flight won't be such a hassle. My kids are 10 and 12 now. We've been traveling with them for about 4 yrs. My husband can't make this coming trip to Turks & Caicos with us, so the kids and I are going alone. It's not stressing me 'cause they know the ropes (i.e., security, boarding, transportation, etc). At this age, they pack their own activity backpack to take on the plane, too! IP: Logged |

We traveled to Harborside from Northern California (we live in San Mateo)last June with our 6 year-old. Granted we only have one child, but it worked out OK. After much agonizing over the right combination of flights we chose to take the red-eye to Ft. Lauderdale and then take the sea plane from Ft. Lauderdale to the small airport next to Harborside. The sea plane was a blast and a highlight of my son's trip. We own one week at Mission Hills in the prime season. We used our staroptions to stay one week at Harborside followed by one week in Orlando at one of the Sheraton timeshares. Therefore, it was two weeks before we repeated the trip back home. Harborside was really fun. My son was not tall enough to go on the big slides, but it didn't matter. He loved all the pools, the lazy river ride, the beaches and he even snorkled for the first time at a place where he could snorkel from the beach. IP: Logged |

My wife and I just returned from the Atlantis (Harborside) and loved it. We are considering purchasing a TS @ Harborside and want to return with our 4 year old daughter. I was very impressed at how kid friendly the resort was. I think your kids will love it.------------------ Brian Not an owner yet, just doing my homework. IP: Logged |

Denise, have you thought about Myrtle Beach? On second thought, I don't think there are direct flights. You'd have to take a hopper from a larger airport, or rent a car and drive the remainder of the way. But it is a nice resort and the beach is great!------------------ Kepi IP: Logged |

My kids would probably love Harborside and Myrtle Beach. Well, or at least us older "kids" would. But while they are little I am probably looking for non-stop flights. Maui was pretty easy and I am very glad we didn't change planes. My daughter experienced her first "panic attack" prior to our vacation last week (she didn't want to go) and it may be a sign of anxiety disorder. It's hard to believe that anyone would NOT want to go to Hawaii so we'll just keep going every year and figure out how to deal with her anxieties. We'll get to Harborside one of these days...maybe without the kids!?IP: Logged |
