Hi I am not sure if I understand this correctly. I recently sat thru a HGVC presentation and didn't come away think the points between seasons were any different, just that it took more to during platinum season. do I understand this correctly or do you need to have platinum pts, not gold, to get platinum week. ie can I save 2yrs gold @5000 and use as 10,000 to get a platinum week somewhere?

Thanks

Larry

Points are points.

There is some benefit to buying a platinum week as you can get more points for the same maintenance fees.

Yes BUT read the part in the advice article about how early you can make reservations. It is the key to the different seasons and point options.

Good Luck

Maintenance fee is the same but price per point is much less for Gold weeks than for Platinum weeks.

Seth why would anyone buy platinum pts, if pts are pts and gold is cheaper? I would think one would just buy enough gold to do whatever they choose in whatever season they want.

The maintenance fee is the same for a gold as it is for a Platinum. Therefore, you must decide if you would prefer to pay more per point upfront for a Platinum (about 35 cents per point extra) or would rather save money upfront but have a higher maintenance fee per point for a Gold. Maintenance fees, taxes and RCI/HGVC fees total about $690 for your first 2 bedroom unit ($605 for your second). That is just under 10 cents per point for a Platinum or just under 14 cents per point for a gold unit.

This is a good question..as a newbie, I also have the same confusion...I've been reading, just about everything in 'Advice' and on the boards, but still unclear:
If I buy a Starwood-resale 2 bdrm gold- can I get into a 1 brm at my home resort during platnuim season (say I do have enough points)????

Post a question about Starwood points. The discussion here is Hilton. So the answers probably won't be the same. There is a good Starwood group here that can help you.

The Hilton MF are the determined by the size of the unit your points buy you during your HOME season. ( Unlike pure point base TS companies where you are charged MF on the number of points you own.)

So, although a 1 bd will have the same MF during the entire year, 5000 gold points gets a 2 bd during gold season and 5000 platinum pts get only a 1 bd. Therefore 5000 gold points pay MF on a 2 bd unit and 5000 platinum points pay MF on a 1 bd unit.

Hope that clears up any confusion.

See this tread for an explaination... http://www.tug1.net/tugbbs1/Forum20/HTML/002467.html

Because MF are higher per point on Gold weeks. Platinum weeks have the least cost per point for MFs at a given resort. Since each resort have different MF pricing it would be that some resorts like Vegas end up with lower MFs than similar size units in more expensive places like Hawaii.

Thank you. So I guess each decision requires determining whether it is cheaper for gold or platinum based on the resort. Guess teh best deal for trade is buy the resort with cheapest cost per pt. and cheapest MF Thanks
