The BEST Hawaiian shave ice is at Jo-Jo's. It is in the little town on Highway 50 that has the statue of Captain Cook on the way to Waimea Canyon. I love the real Macademia nut ice cream on the bottom with a Strawberry-Colada on top!For inexpensive food, my kids like to go the Shack by the Marriott in Lihue. IP: Logged |

The Shack is in the Entertainment book. There is a Ricardo's too anyone hear of that or go there? Unfortunately the only other Kauai restaurants were shut down when Marriott took over the Cocounut Beach Resort that was there. We are having an Easter sunset dinner at the Beach House. We thought about doing the Hyatt Easter Brunch but $50 a person was too high and then I'd still want to go to the Beach House a night. We'll have to try Scotty's BBQ. IP: Logged |

We tried Scotty's BBQ for lunch when we were there in February. It's a really nice place. The view of the ocean is incredible. I had a bowl of spicy chili with rice and my husband had the pulled pork sandwich. Both were very good. We also tried Blossoming Lotus in Kapaa. That was excellent also. It's vegetarian but there are so many different flavors it's an experience just to try different items. The Purple Potato Salad was great. IP: Logged |

Had a great time just wish I was able to stay longer. Our best activity: Zip Line on Kauai. 55 and 54, overweight and off we went! We two heavyweights made that zip line just scream. LOVED IT! Backcountry adventures. They were great. We contacted them directly and paid full price. However, I noticed that they had a chart when we got there showing 10% discount and 15% discount depending who you reserved through. I don't know who gets you the discounts but it will be worth looking in to! It is a must do! We stayed at the Pono Kai which we bought on Ebay without seeing it. We were quite pleasantly surprised. The grounds were lush and perfectly kept. The one bedroom unit we had had been recently redone and was very nice. Just a great basic place to be. Loved it.------------------ Barb IP: Logged |

Just back from Hawaii. Met bnalexander at Pono Kai (HI BARB!) Ate at many of the places mentioned, but also tried a Puka Dog! A polish sausange in a toasted bun topped with hawaiian mustard and tropical relish. It was interesting. In the Poipu Shopping Village near Roy's. Also enjoy the Bull Shed and Bubba's. Get tired of eating out every day so we bought a bottled hawaiian pineapple/chili dressing/marinade (Ono brand) at Safeway, marinaded large shrimp in it and grilled the shrimp and rib-eye steaks on the great Weber grills at Pono Kai. Served it with fresh pineapple and cole slaw made with a Maui Sweet Onion dressing. Enjoyed it all on our lanai overlooking the surf. With our Safeway card the steaks were pretty reasonable.------------------ KathyJ Minnesota IP: Logged |

Forgot to mention the Kilauea Bakery. On the way to the lighthouse. Good coffee and coconut cream filled pastry(for hubby); a just out of the oven foccacia-type grilled veggie pizza square for me. Also, toured Kilohana Plantation and had coffee and dessert there. Fabulous banana cream pie in a coconut macaroon crust. An sweet way to enjoy Gaylord's without the full meal.------------------ KathyJ Minnesota IP: Logged |
