I need some advice. What is the best time of
year to visit San Diego, climate-wise?

Thanks for your input,
Zig

Trevor's about right. I think SD is supposed to have the most consistent weather of any major city in the country except Honolulu.

The best time to visit SD weather-wise is whenever your home town is having its worst.

It got a bit rainy last Feb. so that might be the one month to avoid. However right now we are in a 9 month drought. The last rain I remember was in April.

Often there has been a marine layer that cools the morning until about 10:00 when the sun burns it off. Most days are in the 68 -72 degree range. This is one of the 5 best climate areas in the world.

SD has wonderful, year round weather, but is often in best in SD and along the coast from late May to August. It can get chilly some days in the winter and the beach is enjoyed best in the summer because of the cool ocean current (the current flows from the north by Alaska). Inland, it is a different story, as it can get pretty hot in the summer.

It has been several months since I have been on the board. Being a long time resident of San Diego, this subject interests me. Too many people offer opinions on San Diego's cliamte based on one or two visits. The following is probably what you are looking for.

1. Best month to visit is October. This applies to most of California. October generally has the most consistent clearest weather with warm days and cool evenings.

2. Worst months are typically January-March and June. January- March are typically our rainiest months. June has the most fog and is named "June Gloom" as some days the marine layer doesn't clear at all.

1. May-October is good except for June. April can be pretty nice but is still iffy.

4. November is usually pretty nice with rain being a possibility.

5. September is good but usually our hottest period occurs this month.

6. July and August are best if you want to swim in the ocean. Water temp is pretty cool even during these months and typically run 68-72. These water temps will often last into October.

7. December often has some very nice weather.

The above is just a guideline as the weather is usually pretty nice all year around. It is also depends on the following.

1. Coastal areas are much foggier and cooler in the daytime and warmer at night. This is true for both winter and summer. The temperature along the coast usually doesn't go much above 72 even in the summer. Some areas have typical highs of 68 in the summer.

2. Go a few miles inland and the weather can change dramatically with clearer days and nights with temps 20+ degrees warmer during the day and 10 degrees cooler at night.

If you noticed, I have said typically. There are always exceptions. It is very common to have some hot days in January with temps in the 90's. Even the rainiest months will typically have some nice days though I have seen it rain 25 day out of the month in February and March.

All in all the weather is very nice in San Diego but it is not always perfect. I don't worrey about a cold or rainy day in the winter because I know that most days will be nice. However if it is cold or rains during your 1 week vacation then it is not so nice.

One last thing. You can pretty well bet the farm that it will not snow in San Diego nor rain from May-October ( has happened ).

As a 30 year resident of San Diego, I agree 100% with John and would only add that September is our favorite beach month as it is very nice at the beach despite being a little hot inland and there is very little coastal fog during that month.

Thanks everyone for your replies. We lucked out,
I think. I put in an exchange for fall 2003 for
Capri by the Sea in San Diego. I knew that choice
was iffy since they only have 13 timeshares
available, but it is the only timeshare right
on the beach. I received about 4 choices but
none at Capri by the Sea. A couple were 1
bedrooms and a couple 2 bedrooms. We narrowed
it down to Lawrence Welk or Sand Pebbles. I
wasn't impressed with the description for
Sand Pebbles and the reviews and ratings by
members of TUG weren't all that great. We finally
decided on a 2 bedroom at Lawrence Welk in Escondido
a few miles north of San Diego. I was very impressed
with the reviews and ratings for this resort, and I
have seen several positive remarks about it on
different TUG posts. We lucked out again by picking
a date out of the air (we generally try to exchange
in spring or fall wherever we go, and we take
advantage of vacation escapes the rest of the year).
We had a vacation already planned for spring 2003,
so we chose the fall within a 10 week timeframe
as you have to do with RCI. The week of September
14 came up and we took it not really knowing what
the weather was like that time of year. So, as you
see by the above posts, we are going at one of the
best times of the year although it may a little
warm inland. Warm doesn't bother us, we're from the
south. Thanks all. We are very excited to be visiting
So. Cal. even though it's almost 2 years away.

The Lawrence Welk Villas are inland about 20 miles from the ocean, in a high desert more mountainous area. It may be in the 90's in September. Every mile you drive inland from the ocean, the temp rises a 1/2 degree or more. At the Sand Pebbles, a Sept day is more likely to be 74 - 76 degrees.

On days when there is a foggy marine layer, the sun will burn through it quicker in Escondido/Lawrence Welk area, than at the coast.

Although the Sand Pebbles is a remodeled motel, its location is good for easy beach access and all the little towns up an down the coast. Do check out Cedro's Design section downtown Solana Beach: artists, design studios, hardwood store, unique fittings, etc.

In the 20 years I lived in coastal California, my favorite time to visit the coast was med-September through the end of October. No summer gloom; before the winter rains; weather still usually pleasant. In fact, without the summer fog, the beaches were usually much more pleasant that time of year. Also fewer crowds, because school was in session.

As a SoCal native and 55 year resident I can affirm the above posts. From Labor Day (September will have a heat wave for a few days, but not on the beach) until the first of November is my favorite time.Great weather and no crowds. By all means avoid February and June.
