We go to WDW almost every year with our grandkids and always do several character meals. We always start the vacation with dinner at Chef Mickey's. The food is decent and the characters are great. Plus it gets us in the Disney mood.Cinderella's Castle is a good breakfast with the Princesses and if you have granddaughters who love the Princesses this is a must. Start calling 90 days out from the first day of your vacation and call for every day of your vacation until you get a reservation. Then plan all other character meals around this one because the others are not as hard to get. For the Cinderella Castle reservation call at about two minutes to 7:00 AM (EST) and keep redialing until you get in. Reservations to all the major restaurants at WDW (there are a couple of exceptions) are taken 90 day out from the day you plan to dine. The number to call is 1-407-WDW-Dine.
The second hardest reservation is for the Princess breakfast at Epcot. This is a good breakfast with the lesser princesses (Mulan, Mary Poppins, etc) You follow the same procedure as above for that one. They may do other Princess meals there too but we always go for breakfast. The Cinderella Castle character meal is only for breakfast. They serve other meals in the castle but these are not character meals.
As far as Hoop de Doo Revue is concerned I think it is highly overrated and is NOT a character meal. You are entertained by adults playing adults and no Disney characters at all. The humor is mostly corny adult humor. It is expensive and the food is average. You get unlimited wine and beer which a lot of people think is wonderful. We went last year for the first time and will never go again.
There is a great website that has everything Disney and is very informative about character meals, etc. It is www.wdwinfo.com. It was my hugh source of information when we first started going to WDW.
Have a wonderful vacation with your grandchildren!
