TUG Volunteers:

(firstly, thanks to all you (and past volunteers) do make TUG great!)

I rarely wander into this Features area....glad to get this "heads up" on new software and the need to race and lock-in on my "Hatrack" ID before any other imposters steal it.

These comments above remind me...since we're redisigning the BBS,... can we divide the "Lounge" into two areas in the new and improved TUG? I suggest the main lounge area for "topics of interest to Hatrack", and a secondary lounge area for "topics not of interest to Hatrack"...

Thanks for your consideration.

Hat

PS: if you can add still another, can we insert another topic, next to the Ask RCI and Ask II threads....an "Ask EdB" thread?

I really don't mind starting over but there are some members of this board who started admonishing members for the number (or lack of) posts they had when we restarted last time. My memory says that for example "look at the number of posts for so and so", " how could they possibly have valuable input?" and yada yada yada. I just don't think they will own up to it now. Ron Donze helped me by resetting the number of posts that I actually had as a charter member of this board so I could be more credible. I just think that some people are very very heavy handed and they want to appear as though they are innocent, IMHO I think this is what some people are complaining about on this thread!

Bill has ordered an upgrade on the new server on which the new bbs will be housed to provide more disk space, and more important, more bandwidth. The new board is otherwise ready to go, but to avoid complications we'll not start it up until the server upgrade goes into place.

Shouldn't be more than a few days now, I hope.

I'm not that computer savy, so maybe I don't know what I'm missing, but I like Tug fine the way it is. I don't find it hard to use at all.

First of all, I agree with Liz. I don't find this BBS so bad at all. I pursue many forums and although many of them may look "snazzier", the basics such as post, reply, edit, are all I really need. A search function that works would be a bonus.

If the powers that be determine new TUG BBS software is necessary, that's fine by me too

I also don't see how anyone can base your credibility of timeshare knowledge on the number of your posts. I bet most of mine are not even related to timesharing and many are questions!

There are at least two reasons for upgrading. First, many TUGgers also use other systems, and after a while those get better and better. Now they want TUG to be just as modern.

Second, as something in the software world ages, it gets less attention. At some point, it loses what experts it used to have, so maintenance gets worse. The original vendor may have moved on and now offers no healp.

I hope the new software will make it easier for me to post a reply with a quote! I still can't do it right!
(but I can do smilies!)

so....Hatrack, thanks for the laugh regarding your suggestion to split the lounge forum, if you read my 'hubby post' in the lounge, you will see that I really needed a good laugh today.

This software was abandoned by its authors several years ago. In addition, Laurence Chan, who customized it and set it up for us five years ago has disappeared into the sunset without a trace, making additional changes/improvements/maintenance nearly impossible.

The new board has been customized to look and operate as much like this one as possible -- even the less computer-savvy should have no trouble adapting.

And yes, the search engine should actually WORK, you'll be able to update your own profile information without having to email the changes to the admins, and lots of other nice stuff that makes moderating and maintaining the board much easier.

A very important improvement (perhaps already mentioned) is that there should be no more "pruning" of threads and the subsequent loss of valuable information and insight.

As an example, the archives at FlyerTalk are well-known to be a national treasure

Looking forward to the cessation of archiving my own posts...

Best wishes on a smooth roll-out!

Hi Y'all,

I don't do "New" very well. I kind of like the same old stuff. But, I really love TUG and TUGgers. I do appreciate everything the volunteers do. You lead, I'll follow.
