While the Seafood Buffet at the Princeville Hotel is excellent, so is their Sunday Buffet. I agree with the tugger who said the view is worth the price. You get MTO crepes and MTO omlettes and a fabulous desert assortment. It is pricey though- $45.00 as I recall.

I am leaving for Kauai in less than two months for my first visit. Lots of new experiences for me there! I have, therefore, been watching this restaurant info very closely. This last weekend I put all the info in spreadsheet form and also crossed it with some Kauai Revealed info, along with phone numbers and addresses. If anyone is interested, pease post here or email me with your email address and I will forward the spreadsheet! It is crude but has most of the info for comparison. Or, it could be a good start for someone to get serious about tracking some gooood food!

This has been interesting. I'll be in Kauai in April, after two weeks on the BI. We like "Local" places and small Mom and Pops. This time we will be in the Princeville area.....haven't stayed there before.

Polynesia Cafe in Hanalei! Don't let ordering at the counter fool you -- the food is excellent. When we were there in 2003, they had no liquor license, but you could byob from the grocery store in the same strip mall.

We'll be at the Pono Kai in July with a family of 4 and will definitely want to eat like the locals. I found a review in RCI Community from somone who lives in HI. I can't remember if it was Kauai or Maui, because we're going to both, but they posted a couple items like what to do, where to eat, etc that wouldn't cost an arm and a leg.

The buffet above sounds wonderful, but we couldn't afford that for our family.

Sounds like my kind of place! The place in the Movie "50 First Dates" is what I like. Mahalo!

Right next door to the Pono Kai......The Ono Family Restaurant!
We also loved the Hanamaulu Japanese Restaurant. Very authentic and a has a beautiful garden/Koi pond setting. It doesn't look like anything from the outside, but it's great inside.

Hello all. Thanks for all the interest! If you have requested the spreadsheet and not received it, please request again! Some of the emails have been captured by my spam box. I have been watching closely and think I am OK, but I don't want to miss anyone who is interested! I have been getting a few more opinions so the info is growing!

The good news is we had a fantastic meal at A Pacific/Kauai last night. The bad news (if true) is our waiter said next Tuesday the restaurant is closing!! He also said they are working on opening up again later on in the year in another location.

Thanks for the heads up, Cathy. Since I already own a $50 gift certificate from hawaiisavers (probably many TUGgers do) I contacted hawaiisavers to ask what the procedure would be if Pacific Cafe is still closed in March. I received the following reply
"Hello,
Please do not worry about it, if they are close when you get there, just mail the certificates back to us for a full 100% refund. Let me know if I help you in any other way.

Aloha,

Daniel Duval www.hawaiisavers.com
daniel@hawaiisavers.com
(808) 283-8888"

So all is well with our Gift Certificates from hawaiisavers. That is the good news. Again, the bad news is I might not get to eat there in March!!! I was looking forward to that. Maybe they will be re-located by then.

Thanks for the heads-up.

Barb, I'll be going in a couple of weeks and couldn't find the spreadsheet. Could you send it again? I hope you had a great trip or you are on a great trip since this was about the timeframe.

You have to try

Scotty's Beachside BBQ in Kapa'a.

It's listed in The Ultimate Kauai Guidebook - Kauai Revealed.

It isn't rated in Andrew Doughty's book because he is a part owner. But we would rated it a double "ONO".

We ate there twice, some of the best food on the island. The portions are large and the prices are very reasonable. The view just as the sun goes down is outstanding.
