Whoa Sydney Tugger - thanks for your input - but judging by the number of places you have been and 'discarded' -you seem to be a tad jaded. I agree that once you have been somewhere you may not want to return. However, lots of folks have never experienced these spots and may have completely different opinions. Again - thanks for the input.IP: Logged |

I know, I sound totally indulgent don't I. Seriously though we live so far from everything in the Northern Hemisphere that to go back somewhere, it has to be sense of "I'd never feel complete if I don't go back". If you consider the places on my list, which of those could you fairly say would be worth a repeat all the way from Sydney with four kids in tow and the associated costs???
Plus, while it's worth visiting the Pyramids and Great Wall, who'd go twice as a tourist??? We've been to more places that I didn't put on the list, so I haven't discarded them ALL. Sydney IP: Logged |

I'd like to share some thoughts based on the fact that several people listed Orlando as a "once is enough" destination. I found that very interesting.I've taken my family there every winter (usually weeks 52 and 1, or 1 and 2) for ten years. The people who thought "once is enough" have valid reasons, I'm sure. I could think of some reasons myself not to like the place. It's a perfect illustration of the dangers of suburban sprawl and is like Los Angeles in that regard. There are other problems, for sure. But we loved going there in part because of the attitude we brought to the experience. We have many special memories of our young kids in their baby and toddler years, where the luxurious Orlando resorts made things convenient -- we were able, as parents, to actually achieve a relaxing holiday at places like Vistana or Orange Lake or Star Island, despite the stress of diapers, crying kids, setting up cribs, etc. And it was incredibly affordable for us since we could drive there (although a bit of a hike from Canada, we always made that an adventure in itself) and the availability made it easy for us to get into the best resorts with our cheap South African units. Last winter we decided that we're done with Orlando for at least 4 or 5 years. The kids are old enough that we can consider other adventures (Branson, MO this summer and Riviera Maya, Mexico next winter). We need a break from Disney (our kids are actually tired of it!). We'll look for more cultural experiences when the kids are teenagers (e.g., Europe) but I'll always have a very fond place in my heart for Orlando for the aforementioned reasons. In combination with the warm climate, it's the perfect antidote to parental stress, compared to many alternatives that might be excellent if one is without kids. Just needed to share that with y'all. BTW, we love Williamsburg, Virginia for many of the same reasons we liked Orlando. We've been there twice and will return again many times, I'm sure. Williamsburg would likely be a one-time destination except there are so many resorts to choose from and things are so darn convenient for families. ------------------ Time wounds all heals. I understand what Sydney means. I think there are a LOT of places in the world that make you say "Well, that was interesting, but once was enough and now let's get onto someplace NEW!" Especially when you're pulling kids along with you, it would take someplace really great to make you go there more than once (especially from a cultural standpoint).Usually when we're heading home from a vacation, my husband and I have the discussion of "well, would you go there again" and a few places we sigh and say "I'd go back tomorrow!" (Hawaii, Florida Keys, Maine, Rome, Charleston area.....) and others we say "I'm glad we went, but now we can cross it off our list." I would bet that every place that shows up repeatedly on Never Need to Go Back Lists (Orlando, Mexico, Paris, New Orleans...) also is at the top of OTHER peoples' Would Go Back Every Year Lists! Long story so the short version is we were there on the 13th and almost stayed overnight. Although Nelsons Landing was dry as a bone it was located in a wash and the upper drainage (called ElDorado Canyon) caught several inches of rain in a hour or so. The resulting flood at Nelsons landing (which was a outlet at the end of the drainage) hit without warning killing 9 people, completely destroying boat docks, several boats, numerous RV's and vehicles with boat trailers, a small store and motel. There was absolutely nothing left on the Nevada side and much debri a mile across the river on the Arizona side. I was very lucky not to be there and won't go there again. IP: Logged |

Man I can not believe that New Orleans is on many list. I have been to New Orleans 1 time. I loved it. I was on a business trip so I only had like 3 days, with half the time in meetings. I stayed right on Bourbon Street. I could not get enough of it. And by the way I am not the big partier. I plan to go back as soon as I can.I cannot really think of anyplace I don't really like. I was bored when we went to Branson. I do plan to go again, but just not for a whole week. Laser [This message has been edited by laser1992 (edited 04-27-2005).] IP: Logged |

One place that I really have no desire to return to is Tulsa, OK...as my daughter called it at age 7, "Uglyhoma" and Tiajuana is also on my short list.As an aside and the complete opposite to this thread, I just picked up a book called 1000 PLACES TO SEE BEFORE YOU DIE, A Traveler's Life List by Patricia Schultz, it's captivating and great bathroom literature!! ------------------ Elyse IP: Logged |

We almost make a point of not going backwhere we have been and trying new places. Cannot think of anyplace that I am sorry we went. Freeport, Bahamas..twice was enough, other places in Carib. more interesting. We keep going back to London, and Puerto Rico, and could never get enough of Italy, including Sicily! The dullest places we have ever been are Midwest cities that are not on major waterways. Seems a place needs immigrants, different languages and cultures, to keep from taking local sports teams too seriously and ignoring the rest of the world. My opinion only.!IP: Logged |

Whoa, Brockville! I think the question was concernig places we'd never go back to, and Sydney Tugger answered the question. I didn't think our opinions were subject for debate. Am I wrong? I certainly wouldn't want to go back to Dubois, PA, and that isn't debatable...LOL! quote: Originally posted by brockville: Whoa Sydney Tugger - thanks for your input - but judging by the number of places you have been and 'discarded' -you seem to be a tad jaded. Alaska--we did the cruise and inland tour and feel satisfied. Mount Rushmore, a must see, but twice is enough. Niagra Falls, also a must see. Yellowstone, Grand Tetons, Badlands, Grand Canyon--all must see. This year we are going to Yosemite and probably will not need to go again. So many places, so little time...want to return to the Canadian Rockies, but first... IP: Logged |

Copper...that is really interesting. We lived in Laughlin, NV until last year, and were volunteers for the Metro (Police) Dept. As part of our training, we were taken around the countryside, and introduced to Nelson, NV. We went down to what used to be the Landing, and told the awful story. There is literally nothing left there, except for the little store up the road, where they rent canoes & kayaks. I'm glad you weren't there. quote: Originally posted by copper: Long story so the short version is we were there on the 13th and almost stayed overnight. We love Mexico and would go every year if we could afford to fly all four of us! And Hilton Head is a place we go every 2 or 3 years. Definately different strokes for different folks! IP: Logged |
